People who practice a traditional religious faith are at a lower risk for divorce, according to the results of a study conducted by a sociologist at the University of Connecticut. Conservative Protestants who regularly attend services are 35 percent less likely to divorce compared to people who don’t have any religious affiliation. Couples who are attending church services together, reading the Bible regularly and practicing their faith are going to take their faith and their marriage vows seriously. Filing for divorce may not even be seen as a viable option for them when things get tough.
It’s been a year since Ashton Kutcher got caught cheating on Demi Moore, and on the couple’s sixth wedding anniversary, no less. Moore released a statement shortly afterward that she was moving on with her life but has not filed for divorce. Kutcher’s new girlfriend, Mila Kunis, has said that the couple doesn’t need to divorce because they were never legally married. Their wedding was a symbolic Kabbalah ceremony. If Moore wanted a divorce, she would retain lawyers and get one, and it’s possible that secret negotiations are underway that the public doesn’t know about.
Divorce is difficult for children and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter Suri is reportedly having difficulty dealing with the more modest lifestyle. The six-year-old is behaving like normal children who are going through a major life change and has been acting out, according to hear mother. Holmes is apparently the stricter parent, while Cruise chose to spend $6,000.00 on a helicopter ride in the Hamptons recently. Suri has recently started school, which is another major change in her young life. No doubt she will find wearing a uniform to the elite Avenues school less of an adjustment, though.
Baby Boomers are ending long-term marriages and finding the decision is a very costly one. Emotionally, women may be better off leaving unsatisfying marriages, but they may not be prepared for the change in lifestyle which comes with going from part of a couple to living as a divorced person later in life. The closer a person is to retirement age, the harder it will be to replace assets which will be divided in a divorce. The decision to end a marriage is never an easy one, but it must be considered even more carefully when a person is close to retirement age.
