Florida fares badly in divorce rate. It's in the worst quarter of all the states with around 6 per 1000 people. With the 4th largest state population (18 million), the number of divorces in absolute terms is huge. Millions have been accumulated on file at the state repository ever since a law was enacted in 1927 providing for the centralization of marriage and divorce records.

The State Office of Vital Statistics under the Florida Department of Health is the central public registry in charge of Florida Divorce Records, officially termed as Dissolution of Marriage Records. It maintains divorce records dating from June 6, 1927 to the present. No restrictions exist for ordering these records by the public as long as the required fee ($5.00 per certification) and information are accompanied. The normal processing time is 2 to 3 weeks.

Search results may include:

  • BRIDE'S FULL NAME
  • GROOM'S FULL NAME
  • STATE OF FILING
  • AGE/DATE OF BIRTH
  • PETITIONER'S NAME
  • RESPONDENT'S NAME
  • DATE OF FILING
  • ADDRESS INFORMATION

For divorce records prior to June 6, 1927, they are only obtainable directly from the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce was granted. A listing of all the 67 County Vital Statistics offices with information on addresses, telephone numbers and website links is available from the Florida Department of Health. In dealing with a county vital statistics office for certification, you should contact that office for fee information, processing time and the related county application.

Although divorce records in any state are generally considered public information, they are for some reason invariably difficult to gather. Florida is not so bad in this aspect but divorce record searches are often multi-state making the process troublesome since state databases are inherently not linked. Commercial record providers make better sense for this purpose. No waiting time, nationwide database and professional standards. Try this one for size.
